Yin Yoga

Join Shelley Randall for Yin Yoga every Friday morning!

Yin Yoga is a more passive form of yoga. Postures are done on the floor and held for up to 5 minutes. The purpose of the longer hold is to improve the health of the connective tissues that support the joints. By staying in each posture for a length of time, the connective tissues that wrap around each joint are constricted, expelling any built up toxins. Once the posture is released there is a short, 1-2 minute rest period allowing nutrient rich fluids to rush back into the relaxed tissues rehydrating them and enhancing their health and mobility. A consistent Yin practice can decrease pain and increase flexibility.

Meet Your Teacher:

Shelley Randall received her 300-hour teacher certificate in Yin Yoga in April of 2020 after completing her 200 hours teacher training certificate in Hatha yoga in 2017. Shelley taught Yin Yoga 3 times weekly at her own studio in central New Hampshire for 3 years before selling her home and studio to live and travel in a camper van in August of 2022. Since April of 2023, Shelley has made her home in Mid-coast Maine, returning to her passion of teaching Yin Yoga in Boothbay Harbor and on Westport Island ,as well as at a rehabilitation center in Portland. After a brief hiatus Shelley is pleased to offer Yin classes at Firefly Studio. You can find Shelley outside, in the woods or on the beach with her faithful 13 years young doggie Louise.

Shelley’s yin yoga teacher, Josh Summers was a Licensed acupuncturist and taught from the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Five Elements. This holistic approach indicates that the functions of the organs are connected by energy pathways called meridians that course through the body’s fascial structure. The Five Elements theory suggests that the organs’ functioning are related to one’s emotional state; to the individual senses of sight, sound, taste etc. as well as to the seasons and other systems. Impacting the fascial structure through holding the postures can clear out the meridians that are blocked. This allows for the free flow of “Qi” or life force energy throughout the body, cleansing and clearing the organs thereby improving their health and functioning.
